As a lover of all things handmade I love cooking and baking naturally. Every Sunday I typically bake something sweet and enjoy it with a loved one. It's a great and simple way to just enjoy the end of your week, or begin the new week how ever you see it.
Today's sweet treat is the simple yet the always classic glazed donut, whole wheat style (I had no regular flour so by lack of supplies whole wheat it was)
Ingredients
the donut
1 C. whole wheat flour
1/4 C. + 2 tbsp sugar
1 tsp Baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 C. + 2 tbsp buttermilk
1 egg beaten
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1 tbsp melted butter
the glaze
6 tbsp butter
3/4 C. powdered sugar
2 tbsp milk
1 tbsp vanilla extract
Sift all the dry ingredients together in a bowl.
In a separate bowl whisk together the buttermilk, egg, vanilla, and butter.
Add the wet ingredients to the dry ones and fold in until completely mixed
Now for the baking part I have a baked donut iron, so it's fairly simple for me. If you don't have one of those you can use your donut pans and bake them in the oven at 325 for 10-15 minutes or until golden brown then let them cool for about 10 minutes.
While the donuts cool the glaze can be made
Melt the butter down till it starts to turn brown, and you smell that heavenly brown butter smell ( you know exactly what I'm talking about)
While the butter is reaching its perfection get a separate bowl and add in the milk, vanilla and 1/4 C. of the powdered sugar.
Once the butter is ready add it to the milk mixture and mix it, allow about 5 minutes for the butter to stop its bubbling and cool down a bit.
From there add the rest of the powdered sugar and mix until its a nice glaze.
Dip the cooled donuts on both sides into the glaze. I use strictly one hand when glazing in case I need to grab something because it is messy and I like to have a clean free hand if needed.
The glaze takes about 15 minutes to set, I know its hard to wait lord knows I couldn't!
Happy Sweet Sunday!
